The return of loose clothing
To feel good and move easily, what could be better than loose clothing ? They are spacious, comfortable and always perfectly suited to the season in which we find ourselves. Let’s rejoice: the voluminous garment is making a comeback. But has he already left her ? By allowing us a practical and urban reappropriation of fashion, he has been one of the stars of our closets for decades.
Here’s where loose clothing comes from and why it continues to be popular. Find out how to wear it well and AÉ’s selection to guarantee you a comfortable and foolproof style.
Loose clothing, tradition or street movement
When we think of “fashion“, we often imagine haute couture or the most cutting-edge trends : the style of skirt or shoe that was all the rage at that time for women, or the way of wearing trousers for women.
However, fashion often does not descend from the catwalks to the street, but quite the opposite : it is the street that inspires the most famous houses. And this is how trends are cyclical: from the streets to the catwalks, from the catwalks to the streets.
For the loose clothing trend, you really wonder who came in first from the egg or the hen. In some cultures, clothing has always been the norm : Japanese kimonos, loose pants from East Asia, or even Tunisian djellabas are ancestral cultural elements.
In the West, on the other hand, loose clothing arrived gradually. At the beginning of the 20th century, women began to wear pants. They are very loose and are reminiscent of skirts. Then all the items of clothing once again hold themselves tight to the body for several decades – with the exception of coats, the loose fitting pieces of wardrobes par excellence.
The turn of the 1960s and the era of flower power gave birth to a new style of dress : that of hippies with wide pants, loose shirts and dresses with sometimes missing structure.
Then rock and grunge took over, followed by Rn’B and rap at the dawn of the new millennium. They all make similar choices : wide jeans, oversized jacket, then oversized hoodie. It is the young people and those who make underground culture who systematically put loose clothes back on the streets.
Loose clothes for all tastes !
Loose clothes represent the “street wear” par excellence. They are easy to put on, easy to wear and above all very practical for everyday use. Each of us has in our closet at least loose, comfortable pants and a hoodie, a reassuring “hoodie“!
Loose clothes are popular with everyone, but it is mainly thanks to this marked taste among young people for street wear that loose clothing continues to make a comeback in fashion. They breathe an urban edge into trends and combine practicality with fashionable style every season. The Balenciaga Spring / Summer 2022 show confirms it: the trend is extra-large !
In summer, we see wide shirts, loose pants, skirts or loose dresses. In winter, unsurprisingly, chunky knit sweaters are popular. In the 2010s, we saw the fashion for gigantic scarves resembling blankets, then winter down jackets resembling duvets.
The famous dungarees themselves keep coming back up to date: since the 1990s, they have been a more or less discreet presence in the street. The overalls are the loose fitting garment par excellence : comfortable, practical, all-terrain, they can also be accessorized to become resolutely fashionable!
The loose garment is practical and comfortable, in all seasons. It allows you to bundle up or let your body breathe. But how do you wear it?
How to wear loose clothing ?
Loose clothing is often presented as a unisex piece. Both types include oversized jackets and sweaters, oversized shirts or T-shirts. Even jeans sometimes go from one to the other, as evidenced by the trend of “boyfriend” jeans in the early 2010 s: these loose jeans, straight out of the men’s locker room, worn with high heels and a female top.
The loose garment can be worn as you want! To give structure to an outfit, you can choose to wear only one large piece and combine it with something closer to the body: a mini-jacket to dress a loose dress, for example. You can also decide to wear a fully large outfit, but to structure it with a belt, to mark the waist and bring out the lines of your body.
Recently, the total wide look is in vogue. Instead of mixing pieces of different sizes, we let ourselves totally float in bulky and comfortable clothes. “Mom jeans” or jogging bottoms are paired with large hoodies.
Wide pants come in a thousand ways : 70’s style cinched at the waist and wide at the legs, 7/8 version to expose your ankles, or even straight out of the 1990s …
At AÉ, loose clothing is timeless: both trendy and traditional, it takes us on a journey and accompanies us through the ages.
We wear wide and short pants, like at Anissa Aïda or at Patrick Cupid. We also wear the vaporous dress, it lets us breathe and allows us to move while remaining chic, colorful or more sober.
The raincoat absorbs us completely, it acts as a protective cover. Like the straight dress, the lines are simple, pure and resolutely stylish: fashion as you hear it !
